Gleisdreieck is an elevated Berlin U-Bahn station located on a viaduct in the Kreuzberg district, and served by lines U1, U2, and U3. The U1/U3 platform is at a higher level than, and perpendicular to, that of the U2.
Overview
The station's name literally means "railway triangle," or wye in English, and marks the spot of an earlier major train hub that opened in 1902, where the three branches of the first Stammstrecke U-Bahn line from Zoologischer Garten, Potsdamer Platz and Warschauer Brücke met. A major accident at the triangle happened on 26 September 1908, when two trains collided. One car derailed and fell from the viaduct, killing 18 people and injuring 21. Upon another dangerous incident, the single-level triangle from 1912 was rebuilt and replaced by the current two-level station. Since then there is no direct rail connection between the two lines at Gleisdreieck, but only an intersection.
The new Gleisdreieck
One of the most dangerous places of the entire U-Bahn network was found at the triangular rail junction at Gleisdreieck, which connected the main line between Warschauer Brücke and Zoologischer Garten with the branch line to Potsdamer Platz. This branch was protected only by signals, so that driver inattention could easily lead to a disaster, as happened on 26 September 1908. A U-Bahn train ran into the side of another train, forcing two carriages off the track. One carriage fell over the viaduct and 21 passengers died. As a result, it was decided to change the configuration at Gleisdreieck.
Construction began in May 1912 to replace the triangular junction with two lines built as a grade-separated cross with a new Gleisdreieck interchange station at the intersection. These lines now form part of U1 and U2. The new work was carried out largely with full services operating, although services were briefly interrupted on each line. On 3 November 1912, the new Gleisdreieck station was opened but construction was not completed until August 1913. The connecting track from the Pankow direction to the Warschauer Straße direction continued to be open until the completion of work for use by construction supply trains.
The station is located roughly where the eponymous street crosses the Landwehrkanal in Kreuzberg. The nearby Böcklerpark, a small park with a hall where music events are often held, and the Sommerbad Kreuzberg swimming pool, colloquially called Prinzenbad, are among the most popular venues in central Kreuzberg. The street and subsequently the station were named after Prince William I, the later German Emperor.
Prinzenstraße is a Berlin U-Bahn station on lines U1 and U3.
The station on the first U-Bahn line from Potsdamer Platz to Stralauer Tor was opened on 18 February 1902. Because the station is on a viaduct above the junction of Prinzenstraße and Gitschiner Straße, a street level entrance hall could only be erected on its south side on the grounds of a gas plant, while the stairs to the northern platform had to be included in the opposite residential building.
Destroyed in World War II on 28/29 January 1944 and 3 February 1945, the station was rebuilt in the 1950s. It later received new entrance halls in a hotly disputed Postmodern style, in 1984 for the north wing and 1991 for the south wing. Inside, a preserved detail of the old station is found at the northern platform, a small sculpture of a frog with a crown and a ball, alluding to the Frog Prince fairy tale.
U3 is a line on the Berlin U-Bahn created in its current version on 7 May 2018.
The routing is largely the same as the previous U2 until 1993, but it runs from Krumme Lanke to Wittenbergplatz. The route was renumbered to U1 from 1993 to 2004. It was extended one station further east to Nollendorfplatz to enable trains to be reversed and to allow one-stop transfer to the U4 in 2003. On 7 May 2018, the U3 was extended to run with the U1 all the way to Warschauer Straße.

St. Pauli station is a metro station located in St. Pauli, Hamburg, Germany close to the Reeperbahn. The station was opened in 1912 is served by the Hamburg U-Bahn line U3 (Ring line). St.Pauli station is often used by passengers travelling to the Hamburger Dom fair at Heiligengeistfeld, as it is located closely to its southern entrance.
Landungsbrücken is a railway station and transport hub, located in Hamburg's St. Pauli quarter at the Landungsbrücken. It is part of the City S-Bahn line and the Hamburg U-Bahn.
History
U-Bahn station
The first U-Bahn line in Hamburg was begun in 1906 by the Hamburger Hochbahn. It forms a ring around the inner city. A station was also built near the Landungsbrücken in the slope of the Stintfang hill with 26m NN, nearby Bismarck Monument, designed 1906 by the architects, Johann Emil Schaudt and Walter Puritz. The station, which is called Landungsbrücken today, was built semi-open, which means that the western end is roofed with a concrete slab and the eastern end is left open. The station with the name of Hafentor (Harbor gate), together with the stretch Millerntor - Rathaus (today St. Pauli - Rathaus), finally went into operation on 29 June 1912. The striking tower at the entrance and the elevated railway stop, designed by Emil Schaudt, were torn down during construction of the City-S-Bahn. The new entrance with a copper roof (designed by Hans L. M. Loop and Fritz Trautwein) is connected to the ferry piers by a pedestrian bridge. The eastern entrance was designed by Walter Puritz and was built in the 1920s.
S-Bahn station
The Landungsbrücken station of the S-Bahn has existed since 1975. Since 1979 it is part of the city line tunnel from the Main station to Altona station. A burned S-Bahn train in the station on 30 September 1984, required the station to be completely renovated.
Layout
The main entrance to the station has an escalator and is inside the U-Bahn station building. There is a minor entrance at Eichholz, a side street in the East.
Services
Landungsbrücken is served by the S1 and S3 lines of the Hamburg S-Bahn and by the U3 of the Hamburg U-Bahn.
The U3 is a line of the Hamburg U-Bahn. The ring line with a length of 20.68 kilometres (12.85 mi) serves 25 stations. The first part opened in 1912. The line starts in Wandsbek-Gartenstadt and leads via Barmbek into the ring passing through the city centre and back to Barmbek.
History
The ring line was built from 1906 to 1912 and had a length of 17.48 km (10.86 mi) and with 23 stations. The first part of the line which was first opened in February 1912, was the part between Rathaus via Hauptbahnhof and to Barmbek. On 2 January 1967 the first part of the line to Billstedt opened with the section leading to Horner Rennbahn. Since then, the U3 line was not a ring line anymore until the year of 2009.
In 2009 eastern parts of U2 and U3 lines were swapped behind Berliner Tor. Before that, the U2 line led to Wandsbek-Gartenstadt. Since then, it ends in Mümmelmannsberg, and the U3 became a ring line again with a branch to Wandsbek-Gartenstadt.
